Added your Amex to Uber through Apple Pay? You are getting no Uber Cash

The Platinum puts $15 of Uber Cash in your Uber account each month, but only when the card is entered into Uber directly. A card that reaches Uber through Apple Pay gets nothing, and Uber never tells you.

The Amex Platinum puts $15 into your Uber account every month, plus a $20 bonus in December. It arrives as Uber Cash, which is a balance inside the Uber app that you spend on rides and food.

It only arrives if the card was typed into Uber directly. If Uber sees your Platinum through Apple Pay or PayPal, no balance appears, and Uber's terms say so plainly (Uber). Nothing warns you. Cardholders report going months before noticing.

  1. Open the Uber app and tap Wallet.
  2. If your Platinum is listed only through Apple Pay or PayPal, remove it. Then tap Add Payment Method and type the card number in by hand.
  3. Wait about two days, then reopen Wallet and check that an Uber Cash balance has appeared.
  4. At checkout, tap Uber Cash on before you confirm a ride or an order, because the balance is not applied for you.

The catch. Uber Cash expires at the end of each month, so an unused $15 does not roll over. And if you carry the Amex Gold as well, it has its own smaller $10 monthly Uber Cash credit that works the same way and needs the same direct card entry.

Where this works: Amex Platinum, $15 a month plus $20 in December. Amex Gold, $10 a month.
